“As a result of participating in Men's Action Project, I have learned to view situations from a wider perspective by putting more things into consideration, especially matters related to gender. I also learned to keep my self-care as a priority and have been giving more attention to my needs. I have also noticed that my tolerance level increased through the course of the program and my immediate circles called my attention to that. I have also been applying the lessons learned in my relationships.”

“I became more in tune with how emotional intelligence is important for ensuring healthy decisions are made.Additionally, I am now more inclined to take an intersectional approach when seeking to understand the causes and implications of issues such as sexual assault.

Coming into the Men's Action program, I had already considered myself to be a feminist. However, the program provided me new perspectives around feminist theory that helped me realize how my identity as a black man can make embracing the feminist agenda result in more empowerment for black women. I therefore seek to continue advocating for men of all races to embrace feminism for the sake of their women counterparts.”

“I believe the Men’s Action Project set the foundation for our football student-athletes while I was at the University of Kansas. The staff who work in the Sexual Assault Prevention and Education program provided a safe environment for our student-athlete to open up and learn different approaches to sexual assault and how to work through different situation they may put themselves in.  It was refreshing to have this type of platform for our student-athletes and building them as men.”

“I feel Men’s Action Project helped me to expand my views and grow as an individual. Coming to the University of Kansas was the first time I was removed from the societal influences of home, having attended the university in my hometown for my undergraduate degree. Being a member of the Fall 2019 Men’s Action Project Cohort, I was able to learn about the history of feminism, societal constructs that empower men more than women, and ways that I can become an ally in being anti-sexist and pro-feminist.

After completing the Men’s Action Project, I have a different perspective on my position as man in today’s society. I am able to make conclusions on my own without the influence of others and am able to critically analyze ways that the media and society portrays women and men.”

“The greatest takeaways for me was that in every session there was something to be learned. It's not like other programs or organization meetings where it's repeated info. The program gave me confidence in my masculinity and pride in the fact that I choose to respect people from all backgrounds. I now have no problem in voicing my support of all people. It made me become increasingly introspective when thinking about certain tendencies I've had and break those toxic traits that I would run from rather and work on. Overall, making me a more sound and composed individual. The final thing was that it broke stereotypes for me personally when it came to certain institutions within the University of Kansas and gave me hope that there are men who are willing to put in the work to create positive change.

As mentioned, I have no problem explaining my support of all people and voicing my understanding of backgrounds when it comes to people speaking from a place of ignorance. In that, I believe it's a positive that I can create more awareness on modern topics within our society. In addition, I gained confidence in becoming more aware that 'masculinity norms' don't apply to all people. I've become okay with not having to explain to someone why I do certain things, instead of fearing that it might make me seem feminine or other.”

“Every man has a different view and perception of masculinity due to how they were raised and additional factors, and no on view is correct. However, all forms of masculinity play in to perpetuating unhealthy and toxic forms of masculinity that are harmful to society and encourage less than desirable behaviors. You can still be masculine and show emotions, and it is our responsibility to engage in healthy forms of masculinity and encourage others to explore what “being a man” means to them and why what they think isn’t always what’s best.

I continue to reflect on the space that I take up in the classroom and in the workplace. Even as the only man in my department, it is easy for me to dominate conversation. I also take into account how others have experienced masculinity and how this may have created negative perceptions for them, and how I can play a role in changing that. I continue to apply masculine privilege to my work, especially when engaging and advising non-male/non-masculine students, and how I present in those meetings physically and emotionally. Additionally, I continue to explore the literature on masculinity and evaluate changes in my own behaviors that I can make to create a more healthy personal masculinity.”
