"What Were You Wearing?" Installation Request
We have put together a comprehensive Installation Packet for organizations who are interested in utilizing the "What Were You Wearing?" project. All material will be sent electronically. The Installation Packet includes: templates for marketing (flyers and posters); templates for a content warning (a sign stating that sexual violence will be discussed and a crisis hotline number folks can call if needed); a printable poster of the poem by Mary Simmerling; over 50 stories from survivors for you to choose from and print out; information cards for participants; and a detailed curation guide that includes learning objectives for the Installation including instructions on displaying the clothing, media talking points, and instructions on how to get clothing donated to re-create the outfits in the survivor stories.
Organizations who have hosted the Installation so far report the total cost to be less than $150 (US) to put on the project. This expense is typically associated with printing the stories and poem, marketing material, and the cost of hooks/pins/clothesline to hang the outfits. It is very cost-effective. Please note, the Installation Packet is a merely guidance for the project and each organization is encouraged to customize how it is displayed in your community.
There is no cost associated with the Installation Packet from the University of Kansas, but we do ask that you partner with your local or campus victim advocacy center to host the Installation. This partnership is to guarantee that someone with expertise is centering the voices and needs of survivors during the process. This partnership could be providing onsite advocates during the Installation, working together to secure a location, selecting which stories you will utilize, promoting the event together, or financially covering the cost of materials to host the Installation.
