Sexual Assault Awareness Month

What is SAAM?
Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is a national campaign held in April that raises awareness and education about sexual assault. At KU, SAPEC holds a range SAAM events and programs in April in collaboration with students, other university offices, and community organizations.

Bystander Awareness Campaign
In April 2025, SAPEC and KU introduced a new bystander awareness campaign celebrating the 5,000+ bystanders who have been trained during the 2025-2026 academic year as part of the Jayhawks Give a Flock training. Bystander intervention is a key research-backed strategy to prevent sexual assault on campuses like KU. When Jayhawks are trained to look out for one another, we can keep our campus safer from harassment and violence.
Awareness Flags
In previous years, KU installed an awareness flag display on the Watson library lawn. The flags represented the number of KU students who are impacted by sexual assault. Survivor statistics are listed here for continued awareness of the impact of sexual assault on college campuses. All SAAM 2026 Events

Do You Have a Minute? Responding with a Trauma-Informed Lens
4/28, 2-3:15 PM
Staff & faculty can RSVP on MyTalent via this link
Being a Jayhawk means caring for and about the wellbeing of our Flock. One of the ways we do that is to listen and support each other in our most difficult moments. “Do You Have a Minute?” is a training that aims to equip faculty and staff with information about the impacts of stress and trauma, how to respond in an empathetic and thoughtful way, and the resources available to the KU community to support Jayhawks during their time in the nest.
Denim Day
4/29, 11am - 1pm
Wescoe Beach
This international day of action encourages people to wear denim and share messages of support for survivors to combat victim blaming and educate others about sexual violence. In partnership with SEC, SAPEC will also host a denim drive to collect denim of all kinds for KU's community closet.
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend University of Kansas sponsored events. If you require a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in an event, please contact Jaclyn Carpenter at carpenterjaclyn@ku.edu.
